EDU 11 - Developmental Perspectives in Education

Conscientization Programme Report

  Topic : "Biodiversity Depletion"

Venue : C. A. M. H. S, SALEMPURAM

Education is not just about imparting knowledge and skills; it is also about shaping individuals who are aware, critical, and socially responsible. Conscientization, a concept popularized by Brazilian educator Paulo Freire, is an essential component of education that focuses on raising awareness, critical thinking, and social actions. Conscientization programs among school students involve various strategies and activities that enhance their understanding of social issues, encourage and inspire them to take action. These programs often include discussions, workshops, community service initiatives, and exposure to diverse perspectives and experience.

Biodiversity depletion is a pressing issue that poses a threat to the environment and ecosystems worldwide. In an effort to raise awareness and educate young minds about the importance of biodiversity, a conscientization programme was conducted on 17/01/2024 among VIII standard  students in CAMHS, Salempuram. The programme was conducted by student teachers as a part of BE.d curriculum. Each trainee presented various aspects of biodiversity depletion including its causes, effects, lost of links and remedial measures. This was faciliated through powerpoint presentation enriched with pictures of depletion, causes, extinct environment.

During the programme, students were educated about the various causes of biodiversity depletion, including deforestation, pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change. They learned how human activities such as industrialization, urbanization, and over-exploitation of natural resources contribute to the loss of biodiversity.Students were highly attentive through out the session. There is interactive session, group discussion for students to express their ideas.Students were actively parricipated in the programme.

Students were also made aware of the detrimental effects of biodiversity depletion on the environment and society. They learned that loss of biodiversity can lead to ecosystem imbalance, extinction of species, disruption of food chains, and increased vulnerability to natural disasters. Through interactive sessions and discussions, students were able to understand the interconnectedness of all living organisms in an ecosystem. They learned that each species plays a unique role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem, and the loss of even one species can have cascading effects on the entire ecosystem.

As part of the conscientization programme, students were introduced to various remedial measures that can help mitigate biodiversity depletion. They learned about the importance of conservation efforts, sustainable practices, reforestation, wildlife protection, and reducing carbon footprint.

The conscientization programme on biodiversity depletion among VIII standard students in CAMHS, Salempuram was successful in raising awareness and fostering a sense of responsibility towards protecting the environment.By educating young minds about the importance of biodiversity conservation, we hope to inspire future generations to take action and make a positive impact on the world. This was a valuable experience for student teachers and the students.
